High blood sugar or diabetes before pregnancy or during the first three months of pregnancy is called preexisting diabetes. Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar or diabetes during the pregnancy after the first three months.

It is important to get your blood sugar checked all of the following times:

  • Before you get pregnant
  • When you find out you are pregnant
  • At 24-28 weeks of pregnancy
  • 6 weeks after having the baby

How do you know you have GDM?

All women should have a blood sugar test during their pregnancy. The blood sugar test measures the amount of sugar in your blood.

If your blood sugar is high, you might have GDM. If you have a high sugar very early in your pregnancy, you might have had diabetes before getting pregnant.

It’s a good idea to ask your doctor or nurse for a blood sugar test during pregnancy. You have a right to make sure you have a healthy pregnancy for yourself and your baby. Be sure that you have a doctor or nurse you trust to talk to about your health and your baby’s health.
